Last spring, dancer/choreographer Daniel McCusker
produced his first tHisTHat showcase, which paid tribute to some
of the many kindred spirits who figure in McCusker's lively artistic
world. The showcase was a huge success, critically and otherwise,
and now McCusker is intent on establishing this showcase as his
annual spring fling.
"Boston's dance showcases have often been
motley affairs. Bring in a curator as seasoned as Daniel McCusker,
however, and motley changes to melody ... he gathered some friends
and associates and came up with a coherently beautiful 'salon'
of dance and video works he called 'tHisTHat Show No.1' ... May
there be No. 2, and No. 3, and up into double digits."
[Debra Cash, Boston Phoenix]
"Disparate works mesh in a satisfying,
moving show ... the dance-oriented mixed bill THISTHAT' ... is
a testament to the vision and aesthetic of the concert's curator
and producer, Daniel McCusker.
The veteran dancer/choreographer ... hopes 'THISTHAT' inaugurates
a series of showcases bringing together kindred artistic spirits.
I hope so, too."
[Karen Campbell. The Boston Globe]
As in last year's #1, tHisTHat #2 will highlight
the work of artists who hail from various artistic disciplines,
using a common theme for the concert's through line. The theme for
this year is "miniature" - but the surprises that lie
within these interpretations will be huge.
All the tHisTHat #2artists have been brought
together to explore the idea and significance of what can be described
as miniature. Does miniature mean short duration, small numbers
of participants, a focus on incidents and images that are small?
Or is miniature defined by an appealing and modest economy of scale?
Do economies of scale denote lack of ambition or confidence about
the power of compressed action?
tHisTHat #2gives a platform to the miniature
work of Adriane Brayton, Caitlin Corbett, Edison Dupree, Phania
Exavier, John Kramer, John McDonald, Nicole Pierce, and Megan Schenk.
Their dances, music, words, and images will not only be in dialogue
with each other, but also with the audience, who will actively complete
the emotional understanding of each work. #2 presents new and recent
works by these artists, who all focus on process and who are crafting
open-ended, emotionally resonant, largely non-narrative work. The
non-dance media - music, poetry, video - historically shares a dance
connection, serving variously as inspiration and accompaniment.
Composers, poets and video artists are often collaborators with
choreographers.
