GREEN STREET STUDIOS NEWS
Green Street Studios mourns the
passing of our
good friend, benefactor, and board member
Lissa Florman. January 24, 2010.
Donations made in memory of Lissa
Florman will go directly to the Lissa Florman Scholarship Fund.
Please send donations to Green Street Studios with
checks payable to Green Street Studios, earmarked in memory of Lissa
Florman.
Green Street Studios has also
accepted donations in honor of Stephanie Muir, generous member of
the dance community.
Donations are being earmarked for GSS improvements in honor of Stephanie.
New Marley! New Administration!
We are very pleased to annouce that our Studio
1 has brand new marley! The marley was installed the first weekend
of November. It looks and feels beautiful, and has already been
enjoyed by many!
Along with Green Street
Studios’ new marley!, there have also been administrative
changes that we want to share with our community:
- The GSS office is now staffed by our two
part-time, paid coordinators: Katie Dunkel and Courtney Romanowski.
Last year, as work-study volunteers, they contributed hugely to
the organization; now they take on more official responsibilities.
Katie is primarily responsible for administrative functions and
Courtney is primarily responsible for studio scheduling. Courtney
will also do billing of our occasional or one-time renters. Their
office schedules will be posted weekly on the office door; they
are also available by leaving messages on the GSS phone line and
by email: info@greenstreetstudios
for Katie and scheduling@greenstreetstudios
for Courtney.
- After 2 years in the position of Executive
Director, Abbie Katz resigned this past summer, and joined the
Board of Directors. She will aid the new office coordinators and
work on special projects for GSS.
- Donna Wabreck, who has a background both
in music performance and in accounting, has joined the Board as
Treasurer, allowing our longtime Treasurer, Nicole Pierce, to
retire. We are deeply indebted to Nicole for all her years of
devotion and work.
- Board member Toni Matsu is taking over regular
renter billing for volunteer Deanna Beattie. We greatly thank
Deanna for all of her work.
- Over the past year Lissa Florman and Jimena
Bermejo-Black have joined the Board, and Eliza Mallouk has consented
to join the Advisory Board.
We’ll keep you updated as news continues……
Let us know as you have questions, or suggestions.
Abbie Katz Resigns as Director
To the
Green Street Community:
I am writing to let you know that I have resigned
as Executive Director of Green Street Studios. My term ended formerly
on June 30th. Over the summer I stayed on informally to ease the
transition for Katie Dunkel and Courtney Romanwski, the new GSS
administrators. But now I think it is time to step aside from day
to day operations and accept a new role as a member of the Board
of Directors.
The past two years at Green Street have had
their lows – learning just seven weeks after my arrival that
we were within 10 days of eviction; as well as their highs –
sharing a stage with Lucinda Childs who appeared at a fundraiser
on our behalf. GSS has been able to afford only a part-time Executive
Director, and so it has been particularly challenging to work to
preserve what’s best about the organization while reworking
what has been holding it back from being even more than it already
is. Much of what needs doing gets done by the volunteer staff, and
it’s a testament to their abilities, adaptability and dedication
that GSS runs as smoothly as it does.
There are so many people who I need to thank.
Everyone one of our volunteers has been essential. Teachers, students
and the people who support them welcomed me and wanted me to succeed.
The GSS Technical Director has done a great job in making a good
theater better.
I believe that I am leaving Green Street Studios
working better than when I found it. I have tried to get it on the
path to functional and financial stability and to thereby create
an opportunity for the future artistic growth of the people who
make GSS their home. It’s now the next bit that is important
and I am as eager as the rest of you to see what that might be.
Thank you all, and see you at the Studios,
Abbie Katz

Dear Green Street Community:
There is big, good news of various kinds:
The Board of Directors and I are delighted to
announce that we have a new multi-year lease at 185 Green Street.
Throughout the past 7 years, the amount that we pay for rent has
been an impediment to our financial stability and artistic growth.
With the current lease amendment due to expire June 30th, we were
not sure that staying at the current location was possible or prudent.
However, over the last four months, Patricia Boyd, the building
owner, has worked with us to find a solution that would allow us
both to stay at 185 Green Street and to grow. We now have a two-year
agreement at a rent that we believe we can manage at the same time
as we reposition ourselves financially and artistically.
The Board has decided to use this summer to
plan, fundraise, and begin renovations on our space. We hope to
repaint (no more purple and yellow, please!), re-carpet, install
the next generation of marley in Studio 1, and if we can find the
money, extend the corridor all the way to the door of Studio 3.
We also hope to address the issue of a building signage once and
for all.
I am also happy to announce a new partnership
with Suffolk University, which will be renting class space and hiring
Green Street teachers to teach both ballet and modern dance, beginning
in the fall. Suffolk's Theatre Department is very excited about
utilizing the resources of Green Street and increasing their dance
course offerings. Already they report that enrollment for dance
classes is at an all time high.
Finally, although I'm sure most of you have
noticed by now, Martha Mason and the people who work with her have
decided that they need a facility of their own for their practice,
and so, have left 185 Green Street. We wish them the best of luck.
More later about the future of Studio 3...
In short, lots of good news and the future is
looking very promising. For those of you who will be around during
the summer, you'll begin to see and hear about some changes and
improvements and for those of you who won't be back until the fall,
have a great summer and see you in the fall!

Lissa Florman (1959-2010) was a gifted teacher
and a beautiful dancer, as well as a dedicated Board Member and
long time member of Green Street Studios. She also served as Executive
Director of PALS Children's Chorus of Brookline. Lissa was an exceptional
supporter of the arts, and a devoted wife, mother, and friend. The
Scholarships are established with the generous donations made to
Green Street in her honor since her untimely death in January 2010.
Lissa is greatly missed.
