Project
In what is quickly becoming an annual tradition,
Nicole Pierce and EgoArt, Inc are presenting an evening of dances
only. Deny Nothing: A Dance Concert premiers 4 dance works, a new
video and revisits the dance, “Aeros,” from 2003.
In response to a busy, over-worked, over-scheduled
culture, choreographer Nicole Pierce is presenting 4 premieres that
explore the psychology that develops from a frenetic world. The
dances are complex and tightly structured and they investigate texture,
nuances and the spatial landscape while simultaneously presenting
dancers as real human beings. Two trios, Worry Trio (performed by
Andrea Blesso, Susan Brown and Emily Estes) and Go Don’t Go
(performed by Kate Cross, Maggie Husak and Julie Pike Edmond) confront
these themes from two different sources. “Worry Trio”
is from an internal place – a subconscious environment where
themes of fear, paranoia and neurosis work their way into the movement
vocabulary underscored by provocative music and text by William
Burroughs. “Go Don’t Go” maneuvers relationships
between dancers from an external place and experiments metaphorically
through the juxtaposition of movement ideas between dancers to convey
the various ways people interact. Bunny is a new solo for Artistic
Director Nicole Pierce. The title refers to an old nickname and
investigates an often secreted, softer, vulnerable side of herself
that seeks to find a place in the world. Lastly, The Multitudes
(performed by Andrea Blesso, Susan Brown, Emily Estes and Nicole
Pierce) is a busy and celebratory quartet set to “Metro Chabacano”
by Mexican composer Javier Alvarez. This work takes the most optimistic
path, presenting movement and bustling activity in an uplifting,
quick and exciting spectacle where beauty is permitted and the dance
is for dancing sake.
Because Nicole Pierce is hard-pressed to do
anything without a nod to comedy, she is including a video work,
Bathing Beauties for comic relief. The work is an eclectic array
of Esther Williams-esque water folly (performed by EgoArt, Inc dancers)
mixed with the dramatic camera angles of Leni Reifenstahl’s
Olympic divers.
Finally, Aeros is an exotic dance for six set
to original music by local composer Nikola Radan. “Aeros”
first premiered in 2003 as part of “Ego Show V: Internacionale!”
and will feature appearances by Jimena Bermejo and Jody Weber (original
members) as they join the core cast.
